CHAPTER 17

Jayne’s mother sat on the edge of the bed with her ankles crossed, staring at the classic movie playing on the hotel TV. Her mother’s level of fitness and smooth skin make her appear far younger than she was. She certainly didn’t look like someone who was gradually succumbing to the horrible grip of Alzheimer’s Disease. Hannah was sitting on the other queen bed, scrolling through her phone. Jayne plopped down next to her and almost jumped back up and started pacing. Her entire body felt like it was on a spring. She had a million worries bouncing around her head.

She leaned over and watched Hannah scroll through Paige’s social media. “Has she posted anything in the past hour?” After the dancers from Murphy’s Dance Academy vacated the dressing room, Cindy had caught up with Jayne and confided in her that Paige had gone out for coffee not just with some boy, but some boy she met on social media. This was so much worse than if it had been a boyfriend. Paige had left her phone behind because her mother often tracked it. All a great plan until someone went missing. Jayne didn’t give Cindy a hard time because ultimately, she had come forward with the truth.

Or at least, Jayne hoped she had. She could hardly blame the teen for holding back in front of her mother.

Jayne gave a quick call to Danny, to learn he had pulled over at a Tim Horton’s in Niagara Falls due to poor visibility. He’d come back to the hotel and talk to Cindy. Maybe she knew something about her friend that she hadn’t realized.

“No new posts on Paige’s accounts,” Hannah said. “But there’s a guy.” She tapped the screen. “This must be him.” She moved her fingers apart to blow up the image. Paige’s social media sites were private, but fortunately, at some point, she had accepted Hannah’s follow request. They were, after all, both seniors at Tranquility High.

“Do you recognize him?” Jayne asked.

Hannah squinted. “No, he doesn’t go to our high school.” If he had, Cindy would have known who he was. She would have said as much, right?

“Is that something you girls do? Hook up with guys on the Internet?” Jayne asked. Sure, her peers used dating apps, but why would a seventeen-year-old resort to that? They had plenty of opportunities to meet dates in school, unlike later in life when their worlds got smaller and smaller, with fewer and fewer prospects.

Hannah shrugged. “Not my scene, but I guess some teens do. I figure I might meet someone in college. Or at my first job.” She held up her palms. “I’m in no hurry. Seems to be mostly a hassle.” She shot Jayne a knowing glance.

Jayne scratched her chin. “Well, I guess it’s better than thinking she disappeared into thin air. We know she left with someone. Now, we have to pray her date isn’t an axe murderer.” Jayne kept her voice low so as not to disrupt the movie for her mother.
